LOS AMANTES DEL CIRCULO POLAR (LOVERS OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE) by Julio Medem. I don't know where to begin. Medem's film is weaves symbolism, recurring imagery, and a stark story to leave the viewer speechless, and uncomfortable at the end. Only when it was finished did I begin to understand it, and it's process. The simple themes of the story are those of fate, of chance, and destiny, but all captured within the general framework of everything we encounter in life is part of a circle, if that makes any sense. It was powerful extremely sad, but not sad like Julia Roberts sad, but more dark sad, like Sigur Ros. It's not a chick flick...it's smart and artistically constructed.

I also enjoyed Atanarjuat. I haven't seen Lovers of the Arctic Circle, but i will rent it next time i am in a philisophical mood. Thanks for your post - i appreciate it!
